Belize City is home to the Baron Bliss Lighthouse. It was built in 1885 on the site of a Spanish fortification that had suffered significant damage during the September 1798 Battle of St. George’s Caye. It is painted red and white with a 52-foot focal plane. It bears the name of Baron Bliss, one of Belize’s biggest benefactors, who is rumoured to have never visited the country but was struck by the friendly hospitality of the locals.
