The little island of Alcatraz is located 2.01 kilometres (1.25 miles) offshore from San Francisco, California, in the United States. The island was created with a military jail, a military structure, and a lighthouse in the middle of the 19th century. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a federal prison, was established on the island in 1934.
