The museum has its roots in a museum that the Geological Survey of Canada founded in 1856. The museum moved its headquarters from Montreal to downtown Ottawa in 1881. The museum moved to the Victoria Memorial Museum Building in 1911. Originally a natural history museum, the organization gradually evolved to include a human history and anthropology section. In 1927, the organization changed its name to the National Museum of Canada.
