Located in the Black Hills close to Keystone, South Dakota, the massive sculpture etched into the granite face of Mount Rushmore is the focal point of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. With the assistance of his son Lincoln Borglum, sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the project’s implementation from 1927 to 1941, designing the monument known as the Shrine of Democracy.
