Originally constructed in the first century AD as an aqueduct bridge, the Pont du Gard transported water over 50 kilometres to the Roman settlement of Nemausus (Nîmes). In southern France, it spans the Gardon River close to the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. Of all the Roman aqueduct bridges, the Pont du Gard is the tallest and finest preserved.
