A glacier that is part of the Chugach National Forest, Portage Glacier is located on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula in the United States. It’s six kilometres west of Whittier and south of Portage Lake. Because Portage Glacier is located on a portage route between Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm, it was given this local name when Thomas Corwin Mendenhall of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey first described it in 1898.
