Following a meeting in April, the Old Settlers Association of Dakota Territory was established on May 7, 1862, and became the South Dakota State Historical Society. A few months after the state’s admission to the union, in 1890, it changed its name to the State Historical Society of South Dakota from the Historical Society of Dakota.
